As we all know wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other fruits. Wine has an incredibly rich history dating back thousands of years. It has played an important role in many facets of different cultures, dining, religion, celebrations and even more.
Wine now has an even more developed culture and history. There are connoisseurs out seeking out vintage wines and creating new and interesting combinations. A huge part of wine culture is figuring out what sort of food to pair your certain wine with.
There are so many wonderful wines out there it can be hard to choose. Options such as grape variety, vintage, and sweetness make it hard to figure out the best wine to pair with your next meal. Wine can be a perfect accent to whatever meal you are having. However, for those of you with a sweet tooth, like myself, you can pair all kinds of wine with your favorite dessert.
This wonderful infographic from Shari’s Berries is a guide of sorts for deciding on pairing for your next wine and dessert.
A rule of thumb I like to follow which the infographic corroborates is as the dessert gets darker your wine should get darker. For example, a rich chocolate cake can be paired splendidly with a full bodied shiraz. On the other side of the vine, if you see a slice of key lime pie in your future a sweet riesling would be the way to go. If you find yourself with a nice bottle of champagne waiting to be popped, shortbread or chocolate covered strawberries would make the perfect companion.
Don’t be afraid to experiment because in the end it all comes down to your personal preference and palette. Wine is truly a miracle drink and there is so much that can be learned about it. Use the above guide to get started on your wine pairings and you will be hosting wine night in no time!
