Throw in some friends, music, hearty conversations, lip smacking food and tie them all up with wine and you end up with a fabulous wine party. There are many kinds of wine tasting parties and while some focus mainly on education about wine, others focus more on the fun quotient. But if you are the kind who likes to balance the education and the fun at your wine party, then a blind wine tasting may just be your thing. Read on to know more.
What is a blind wine tasting party?
A blind wine tasting party is an event where the wines served are not labelled. In other words, the guests do not know what they are drinking. Either the host serves the wines or the guests bring their bottles of wine. Either way, the label is concealed. This is done so that no one attaches any pre-conceived notion or bias on any particular wine and the drink is enjoyed solely on its own merit.
Once the wines are consumed and everyone selects their favourite, the labels on the wines are revealed. If the new wines are favoured, then the guests end up with some great new discoveries for their cellars.
How to host the perfect blind wine tasting party?
So if the concept sounds interesting to you, you can plan a blind tasting. You can either get all the wine yourself or ask your guests to each carry a bottle of wine. Encourage them to get uncommon wines as that will make the event more challenging and enjoyable.
Keep the food to a bare minimum as you wouldn’t know what kind of wines would arrive at your doorstep. Wrongly paired wine and food can be a massive party pooper and so it would be a good idea for you to concentrate on the wine alone. Schedule the party in the early evening so that your guests can return home for dinner.
How to keep the wines a secret?
Now that could be a challenge! The whole purpose of a blind tasting is to break the biases people attach with some wines.
While some people favour only a specific kind of wine, they stay away from another due to some mindlock. So you have to ensure your guests try all the wines. And if they don't know what they are having, it will be a little hard for them to be biased!
So make sure you cover up the label well. If you are getting the wine, put a cover on the label. Or, peel off the label and number each bottle. In a notebook, paste the label and write down the same number that you wrote on the bottle. This will help you identify the wine later. If your guests are getting the wine, instruct them to cover up the labels properly. It is a good idea to keep some brown paper bags and rubber bands at hand. If a bottle arrives with the label on, you can quickly put it in the bag and seal the neck with the band. Then write a number very prominently on the bag with a marker to give it an identity during the tasting.
Tips to make your party a hit
Apart from the usual conversation, you can also add some fun elements to the party. Have some games. A popular blind tasting game is the Price Guessing game. Have the guests guess the price of the wines they just tasted. This is a very interesting game, as many a time, people assume that the good wines are the expensive wines. Leave your guests pleasantly surprised by revealing the prices later on and showing them that at times, a little-known supermarket wine can also be delicious!
Then, have some prizes. The winners of the games could go home with the bottles that received the most amount of accolades. The person who brought that bottle would also win a prize.
Finally, get a wine expert to come in for a few moments and inform your guests about the new wines they sampled. You can find a wine expert at a wine store, a restaurant or even at a local winery. One can also write to email@example.com.
From blindfolded wines to revealed labels, your guests will talk about the party for a long, long time! A blind wine tasting party can be a lot of fun and if you are looking for an evening of laughter, surprises and memories, this party is just what you need!
