Everyone who saw the delightful 2004 movie Sideways, remembers the affable characters of Miles and Jack. Based in the book of the same name, Sideways became one of the most popular movies and the two protagonists became unforgettable.
And now Miles and Jack are back!
Rex Pickett, the marvellous storyteller is back with a continuation of the story he told more than a decade back. Miles and Jack are on a new adventure and this time they are joined by Miles’ elderly mother, her dog and her rather lively helper, Joy. They all travel to the International Pinot Noir Celebration in Oregon.
Along the way the team encounter a number of adventures and as a reader you are drawn into the humour and the irony of the situations all at once. New relationships are explored and old friendships are celebrated. The storytelling, as expected, is exhilarating and compels you to read on.
Pickett wisely uses Miles’ voice as the narrative, giving it a third person tone. However, anyone reading the book can guess it is actually Pickett who is speaking in the first person, in almost an autobiographical fashion.
Vertical – Passion and Pinot on the Oregon Wine Trail is a book for everyone, irrespective of their love for wine. The book speaks wholeheartedly about wine and the wine drinking experiences, but it does so in such a way that everyone from a teetotaller to a whisky fan will enjoy it.
Give this book a read if you are looking for a story to warm your heart up. The characters stay with you long after the book ends and the experiences seem truer than you expected.
